CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS

Onsite classroom / logistics requirements

  • Instructor and additional MapR representatives (optional) physical access
  • Projection capabilities from instructor laptop viewable by all students
  • White board viewable by all students
  • Seating and tables to accommodate 16 students and instructor
  • Students with laptop computer or classroom personal computers that are internet capable
  • Internet connectivity for both students & instructor (details below)

MapR will supply presentation materials in PDF format to the students at the start of the class.

MapR will supply the instructor & lab environment.

MapR will require a daily roster to track all attendees.

Classroom internet connectivity requirements

The students and instructor will need reliable low latency interactive access to the following domains/ports during the class. We do not expect to require high bandwidth, but all students will be simultaneously accessing these sites during class and will need reasonable interactive speeds:

Domain Port Purpose
box.com   443   download soft copy of courseware
mapr.com   80   node hostnames on wiki page
amazonaws.com   8443   MapR Control System
amazonaws.com   22   SSH to nodes
mail.google.com   443   MapR Instructor email access

MapR Student Software and Connectivity Pre-Requisite Check

If you are attending an Open Enrollment class

Prior to the first day of a MapR class, we recommend that you take a few minutes to ensure that you can connect to our lab environment on the computer you will be using for class. This will save valuable classroom time for working on the labs and give you the opportunity to focus on your training experience. Please perform these checks on the computer you intend to use in class.

If you are attending an Onsite Customer class

Prior to the commencement of a MapR class, we recommend that you take a few minutes to ensure that you can connect to our lab environment on the computer you will be using for class. This will save valuable classroom time for working on the labs and give you the opportunity to focus on your training experience. Please perform these checks on the computer you intend to use in class or have been provided for you in the classroom.

There are 2 types of connectivity you need to check:

HTTPS on port 8443

The first test we will perform is HTTPS browser connectivity. Click the link below (or right-click and select Open URL in new tab/window):

https://ec2-50-18-22-129.us-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com:8443

Note: You must use Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or Safari.

Your browser will display a security warning that indicates the Web server is using a self-signed certificate. Different browsers show you this warning differently. Click the equivalent of “proceed despite this security warning” in your browser, and you will see the login page of the MapR Control System. Do NOT try to login -- you have passed the test.

SSH on port 22

For certain labs, you will connect to MapR nodes via SSH on port 22.

Mac/Linux Users

Open a terminal application and execute the following command. Initiate a SSH connection to the node from your terminal window.

ssh testme@ec2-50-18-22-129.us-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com
Windows Users

The hostname you will be connecting to is ec2-50-18-22-129.us-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com and the username is testme.

All Users

In either case, if you are able to access a password prompt as the testme user on the node then the SSH test was successful. Do NOT try to login -- you have passed the test. Be sure to exit out of your terminal session.

If you were not successful with either the HTTPS test or the SSH test, then you will need to bring this to the attention of MapR training prior to the start of class.

Thank You

Thank you for taking the time to test access to our lab environment. We look forward to seeing you in class!
