John is MapR's Executive Chairman and Founder. He founded MapR in 2009 and served as the company's CEO until 2016.

Prior to founding MapR, John held executive positions in a number of enterprise software companies with a focus on data, storage and business intelligence at both private and public companies including: CEO of Calista Technologies (now Microsoft), CEO of Rainfinity (now EMC), SVP of Products and Marketing at Brio Technologies (BRYO) and General Manager at Compuware (CPWR).

During a recent trip to the Asia Pacific region, I was astonished at the growing excitement already over Apache Drill; equally amazing is the fact that the adoption of Drill is skyrocketing. The groundswell of support we are seeing within the community is validated today by the Apache Foundation announcement that Drill is now a Top Level Project. You’ll find plenty of documentation on the Apache Drill project site, but let me tell you about the glowing feedback I received from customers and system integrators, and why these customers are so excited about this new tool.

We are pleased to announce that MapR has entered into an expanded partnership agreement with Teradata to provide our best-in-class Hadoop distribution, support, and services as part of the Teradata Unified Data Architecture. MapR already has dozens of joint customers with Teradata across major industries who use both of our solutions. Now those customers benefit from even deeper technical integration and new options for support and services.

Today is a big day for MapR Technologies. We are coming out of stealth mode to talk about the innovations that we’ve developed for Apache Hadoop. These innovations build upon the great work already completed by the Apache Hadoop community. The community is also being enriched by a growing number of companies that are building out the complete technology stack and services to further Hadoop market adoption.

The books Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies, and most recently, Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap…And Others Don’t by Jim Collins, have motivated entrepreneurs to build enduring companies. Collins cites companies such as General Electric, American Express and Walmart as examples of great companies, and he provides insights as to why they are great along with strategies and actions that make them great companies.
